The case for Claude
Claude is what you reach for when the work is text and the text is serious. It handles very long documents and keeps track of them, which changes what “read this contract” means in practice. Writing quality and instruction-following are consistently praised, and the coding abilities extend into agent-style tools for developers. The trade-off is deliberate: no native image generation, fewer consumer bells and whistles. Less toy, more desk.
The case for Gemini
Gemini’s argument is not the model; it is the address. If your inbox is Gmail and your documents live in Drive, Gemini works over your own data: drafting replies in thread, summarizing what you already have, querying documents where they sit. Paid tiers bundle with Google One and bring very large context windows, and the multimodal side (images, video understanding) is strong. The recurring annoyance is real, though. Features differ by country and account type, so check that the thing you are buying it for exists on your account first.
Where they actually collide
Both handle long context well, which used to be Claude’s headline alone. The difference now is texture. Claude tends to win on the quality of what comes back from a long document: the careful summary, the draft that sounds like you meant it. Gemini wins on not having to move the document at all. For a one-off analysis, upload it to Claude. For living inside a hundred Workspace files a week, the integration does daily work no standalone chat can.
Our recommendation
- Writers, lawyers, analysts, anyone whose output is documents: Claude. This is its home turf, and it shows.
- A team that runs on Google Workspace end to end: Gemini. The bundle is quietly excellent; a standalone subscription has to beat “already there”, and it usually cannot.
- Developers: Claude for the coding and agent tooling; Gemini only if the Workspace pull is strong.

Both free tiers cost nothing but a fortnight. Run your real workload through each and keep the one whose answers you stop re-checking.
